Does It Snow In The Ozarks? How Much?

Sharing is caring!

When I first moved to Missouri my family back in the Rockies would ask me almost every day of the winter if we had gotten any snow yet.

In my first year here we got such a small amount of snow that I assumed that it would be the norm. After all, the Ozarks are located in the southern United States, so you wouldn’t be wrong to assume that it doesn’t snow here very often.

However, I was surprised to learn that, on the average year, the Ozarks actually do get quite a bit of snowfall! In fact, winter weather in the Ozarks is one of the main reasons why so many people choose to visit us each year.

How Much Does It Snow In The Ozarks?

The amount of snowfall the Ozarks receives each year can vary quite a bit. Depending on the location within the Ozarks, our average annual snowfall ranges from 10-20 inches.

However, most snowfall is light and melts fairly quickly. In the past, there have been periods of time where the Ozarks have received 50+ inches of snow on the peaks throughout the winter season but such heavy snowfall is rare.

The Ozarks cover such a large area (around 50,000 square miles) that the amount of snow received can vary greatly by region. In addition to how far south an area is the average height of the mountains in the area plays a huge role in the amount of snow received.

What Is Winter Weather Like In The Ozarks?

In general, winter weather in the Ozarks is fairly mild. Temperatures during the day typically range from the low 30s to mid-40s, though it isn’t unheard of for temperatures to dip into the 20s or climb into the 50s on occasion.

At night, temperatures usually fall into the teens or low 20s. Of course, as with anywhere else in the world, winter weather in the Ozarks can be unpredictable at times so I’m always prepared when I go out during the winter.

Hot Cold Does It Get In The Ozarks?

If you’re considering camping in the Ozarks during the winter then you’ll want to be prepared for some cold weather, even if it doesn’t happen.

While it’s rare that it gets frigidly cold, the Ozarks are routinely below freezing at night. In fact, the lowest temperature recording in the Ozarks was in 1953 during an unusual cold snap where overnight temperatures dipped to -1 degrees Fahrenheit!

Winter Activities In The Ozarks

One of the main reasons that I was curious about snowfall in the Ozarks was that I hate getting snowed in. Growing up in Utah we had days that were so cold and snowy that we couldn’t even get out and ski.

So what is there to do in the Ozarks during the winter? Does the snow put on damper on activities? Well, yes and no.

It turns out that the weather is mild enough that the snow melts quickly and allows people to get out and enjoy nature.

Now that I’ve lived in the area for a while, I have the say, the Ozark Mountains are a beautiful destination all year round, but there is something special about the area during the winter months. From snow-capped peaks to blanketed forests, the Ozarks come alive when the temperature drops. If you’re looking for a winter getaway that’s both picturesque and action-packed, this is the place for you.
