History Of Ash Flat

Rich in history and tradition, Ash Flat was established in 1854 by Lazarus Thomas and John David as part of a plan to settle the Osage Indians after they were driven from Missouri.

The first schoolhouse, located three miles northwest of town, opened its doors shortly thereafter, followed by churches and stores that began to dot the landscape.

The arrival of the railroad in 1887 secured all the commercial prospects for the budding village and heralded its present-day existence. Both a railroad depot and post office were erected that same year.
